A white wedding dress isn’t always the first choice for brides: Several stars have taken a less traditional route for their wedding look, opting instead for a black outfit.

Chloë Sevigny first wed her husband, Siniša Mačković, in a black midi dress for their civil ceremony in 2020, before hosting a larger celebration two years later. Meanwhile, Shenae Grimes-Beech intentionally chose a black ballgown for her 2013 wedding to Josh Beech to showcase an elevated version of her everyday style.

Sarah Jessica Parker picked a black wedding dress when she married Matthew Broderick in 1997. While the iconic gown sparked a bridal trend, the Sex and the City actress told Marie Claire in 2006 that she chose black to draw attention away from herself.

“I was too embarrassed to get married in white, and both Matthew and I were reluctant to have people pay so much attention to us,” she said. “Which is ridiculous, because that’s when you can relish the attention, when it’s natural.”

Here are eight celebrities who wore black wedding dresses.

Grimes-Beech walked down the aisle in a black Vera Wang gown when she tied the knot with Beech on May 10, 2013. The dress featured a halter neckline and a tulle skirt with a light-colored layer.

During an appearance on the Scheananigans with Scheana Shay podcast in August 2023, Grimes-Beech shared that she felt she “should look like myself” on her wedding day as someone who often wears “head-to-toe” black.

“I googled ‘black wedding dress’ just to see if that was even a thing,” she said. “Vera Wang had just done a collection of only black and red wedding dresses, and I was like, ‘That’s crazy.’ She’s like the wedding dress person. And I saw this one. And I was like, that’s it.”

The actress later told Harper’s Bazaar in 2016 that she regretted wearing an unconventional wedding dress and would “white it up” if she ever renewed her vows.
