Adam Peaty-Ramsay’s reign as Britain’s breaststroke king looks to be fading after he was made to settle for bronze in his 100 metre breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games.
Peaty-Ramsay was edged out in a thrilling race won by Australia’s Sam Williamson, who powered home in 59.17sec, with Jersey teenager Filip Nowacki claiming a historic silver.
Nowacki has long been billed as the understudy to Peaty-Ramsay and the 18-year-old – Jersey’s first in the Commonwealth Games for 36 years – signalled a changing of the guard.
Ramsay-Peaty, 31, who was cheered on by his wife Holly, the daughter of celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay who he married earlier his year, finished just under half a second behind winner Williamson.

“That was a great race, and it’s always a privilege racing against Adam,” said Nowacki, who ended a medal drought that had lasted since 1990 for the Channel Island. “Some of the Aussies, it’s my first time walking away with the silver there and Jersey’s first medal in quite a long time.”
Nowacki is a year younger than the age Peaty was when the Uttoxeter man burst on to the scene at the 2014 Games – which were also staged in Glasgow – to claim his first 100m breaststroke Commonwealth title. This was his first major championship and his prowess in the pool suggests he is only just getting started.
Peaty-Ramsay had hoped to reclaim the 100m breaststroke title he last won at the 2018 edition on Australia’s gold coast after his aura of invincibility was shattered at the 2022 iteration in Birmingham, where he finished fourth to lose his first breaststroke race in his senior career.

Peaty-Ramsay heaped praise on his prodigy Nowacki ahead of tonight’s final. After his time away from the sport in 2023 and highly-publicised marriage earlier this year to Holly Ramsay, the daughter of celebrity chef Gordon, he has been at pains to point out that he is a different athlete now. “I’ve done this for a very long time,” said Peaty. “It does get harder and harder to keep racing,” he said. Adam Ramsay-Peaty will be the headline act in tonight’s 100m breaststroke final but keep an eye on Filip Nowacki from Jersey, who could give him a run for his money.
A double world junior champion, 18-year-old Nowacki has long been identified as Ramsay-Peaty’s successor. He finished just 0.33 seconds behind Ramsay-Peaty in yesterday’s semi-final after chasing hard on his second 50m split.
“I’ve definitely got a bit of a scrap in me,” said Nowacki, who is bidding to end Jersey’s 36-year medal drought at a Commonwealth Games. “To be racing one of the best in the world – arguably the greatest breaststroker of all time – is very special to me. I’m confident, my training’s been progressing really well.”
Already a world junior 100m and 200m breaststroke champion, Nowacki has long looked up to Ramsay-Peaty. “He’s a true role model in the sport,” he said. “Even in the call room before, he’s just so professional and so zoned in. Being one of the youngsters coming through, it’s very important to look up to people like that. Those senior athletes know what they’re doing. They’ve been in that position many times before and I think it’s important to keep an eye on what he does.”
