Amber Heardis opening up about the effects of the highly publicized legal battle against her ex-husband, Johnny Depp, in a new documentary.
Heard is featured in the documentary, Silenced, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Saturday, Jan. 24. The film centers around the weaponization of defamation lawsuits against survivors of abuse.
In Silenced, Heard sits down with director, Selina Miles, about the aftermath of the defamation trial between Depp and herself.
"This is not about me," Heard said. "I have lost my ability to speak. I am not here to tell my story. I don’t want to tell my story. In fact, I don’t want to use my voice anymore. That’s the problem."
International human rights lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, is also featured in the documentary. Robinson had previously worked with Heard when Depp had filed a lawsuit against British publication The Sun. Depp sued the publication for calling him a "wife beater."
In regards to Depp's lawsuit against The Sun, Heard said, "I remember at the close of the trial, the idea that I could say something to the press came up. [Robinson] asked if I was sure about that. [I thought], 'If they throw things at me, it will make this point more obvious.' I didn’t understand it could get so much worse for me as a woman, using my voice."
Depp lost his lawsuit against The Sun in November 2020 as the court upheld that the publication's claims were "substantially true." In March 2021, Depp attempted to overturn the decision which was overruled.
According to the Sundance Film Festival, along with Heard's story, Silenced follows, "Catalina Ruiz-Navarro’s fight for press freedom in Colombia," and "Brittany Higgins’ struggle within Australia’s political establishment."
"It gives me strength seeing other people take on the fight. Women brave enough to address the imbalance of power," Heard says in the film. "Looking at my daughter’s face as she grows up and slowly starts to walk into this world … I believe it can be better."
