Ex-US tennis star faces brutal mockery after 'proposing in hotel bathroom'

Former American tennis star Christopher Eubanks has announced that he's engaged to his partner, Anna Mitchell, but fans have questioned the location where he proposed.
Eubanks may no longer be a professional tennis player after retiring in November 2025, but he was kept extremely busy throughout the US Open. Eubanks was serving as a media role in New York and put Coco Gauff on the spot during an on-court interview.
Shortly after the US Open concluded, and Ben Shelton was unable to upset Alexander Zverev in the men's final, Eubanks celebrated a significant moment with his partner. Eubanks and Mitchell are now engaged, but he appeared to be in a bathroom when he popped the question.

Eubanks and Mitchell announced the news on Instagram in a joint post, with the caption "Forever." The post shows pictures of them embracing, Eubanks on one knee, and a candid shot of them both taking in the significant life event.
The reaction was extremely positive online, with Jessica Pegula, Coco Gauff, and even Gauff's mother commenting on the post. Taylor Townsend, Sloane Stephens, and Tommy Paul also reacted.

However, fans couldn't get past the fact that it looked like Eubanks proposed in a fancy bathroom, prompting a different kind of reaction.
"I don't know many people that would propose in a bathroom?! But that aside congratulations to both Anna Mitchell and Chris Eubanks, wishing them all the very best," one fan wrote on X.
"Nothing says I love you when you say it in the bathroom," another added. "In the bathroom? Not romantic at all!" A third joked.
"What woman is saying yes in a bathroom…. Thats unreal," one user claimed. "Congrats to them! I just wish Chris had maybe picked a better location," another fan wrote.
One fan even hoped that the location was staged and that Eubanks proposed somewhere else. "Congrats, but I hope this was just staged for socials and not where he actually proposed," they said.

It's been a year of change for Eubanks, who is now engaged after retiring from tennis and signing a three-year deal as an on-air commentator and host. Eubanks also agreed to continue working for ESPN at the Grand Slams.
"I’ve always loved talking tennis almost as much as playing it,” Eubanks said after joining Tennis Channel. "Tennis Channel has always been such an important part of how fans experience our sport, so to now join the team in this capacity is incredibly special.
"Having the opportunity to share what’s happening inside the lines — the strategy, the emotions, the momentum shifts — is something I’m really excited about. Tennis has given me so much and I am looking forward to staying connected to the game in this way."
