Grammy-winning singer Duncan Sheik is in ‘critical but stable’ condition, receiving medical care

Duncan Sheik is in “critical but stable condition,” a statement published on his social media read.

The singer and composer is “currently receiving medical care.”

It added, “We kindly ask for privacy during this incredible difficult time.”

Grammy-winning singer and composer Duncan Sheik is in “critical but stable condition” as he receives medical care for an undisclosed ailment.

“We would like to share an update with Duncan’s fans and the public,” a statement published on Sheik’s Instagram account Wednesday read. “Duncan is currently receiving medical care and remains in critical but stable condition. Out of respect for Duncan and our family, we will not be sharing any further medical details at this time.”

It continued, “We kindly ask for privacy during this incredible difficult time and will provide updates when appropriate. Thank you for the continued love and support.”

Representatives for Sheik and his record label, Nonesuch Records, did not immediately respond to Entertainment Weekly’s request for comment.

Following the announcement, the post’s comments section was filled with support from stars across the worlds of music and theater, including Noah Galvin, Lizzo, and Kathryn Gallagher. Grammy-winning singer Lisa Loeb added, “Sending love.”

While a diagnosis was not disclosed, Sheik, 56, has documented multipletrips to the hospital on his Instagram account in recent months.

“I would prefer to be home making music,” he captioned on Aug. 20 post. “But a bit of reflection is not too bad … boring hospital stays have their benefits (outside the obvious.)”

Sheik rose to stardom following the release of his 1996 single “Barely Breathing,” which was nominated for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at the 1998 Grammys. He has since released nine studio albums, which include hits like “On a High,” “Longing Town,” and “Bite Your Tongue.”

In addition to his work as a soloist, Sheik has also enjoyed success as a composer for film and theater. He famously penned the music for Steven Sater’s Spring Awakening, which starred Lea Michele, Jonathan Groff, and John Gallagher Jr. when it opened on Broadway in 2006.

The rock musical saw Sheik earn two Tony Awards for Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations and a Grammy for Best Musical Show Album for its cast recording. A new off-Broadway production of Spring Awakening is set to begin previews at New York City’s Studio Seaview in November.

His new off-Broadway musical, Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen, is also scheduled to begin previews in at the Night Egg at the Culture Club on Sept. 25.
