Kate and Gerry McCann have been pictured in the crowd to watch their son, Sean, swim for Scotland at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The couple, whose daughter Madeleine McCann, then three, went missing in Portugal in 2007, were seen among fans at Tollcross International Swimming Centre, where Sean is due to make his Commonwealth Games debut and first senior appearance for his country at midday on Saturday.

The McCanns have prioritised giving their twins, Sean and Amelie, a normal upbringing despite the global spotlight that has followed the family since Madeleine’s disappearance nearly 20 years ago.

Little is known about the 21-year-old’s swimming journey, which had flown under the radar before his Commonwealth Games involvement was confirmed.

Sean qualifies for Scotland through his Glasgow-born father. His performance at the Commonwealth Games, where he is racing in the 400m, 800m and 1500m freestyle events, could establish his credentials as one of Scotland’s brightest young swimming talents.

It was only a matter of time before Sean, who has competed at the Commonwealth Youth Games and European Junior Championships, would be the subject of significant interest.

In a video published earlier this week by Loughborough University, where he is studying chemical engineering, Sean said: ā€œI’m very excited, it’s my first senior Games, so I’m just looking forward to representing Scotland and doing my absolute best. It’s the pinnacle really ... especially at a home Games. I’ve got lots of family up in Glasgow so that makes it even more special.ā€

Although the McCanns have kept their children’s personal lives out of the public eye, Sean’s profile will grow following his Commonwealth Games debut. Amelie is also a keen sportsperson as a high-level swimmer and triathlete.

They were both two years old when their sister, Madeleine, vanished from her family’s Praia da Luz holiday apartment in May 2007 while her parents dined nearby.

Kate and Gerry McCann have previously spoken about the challenges of protecting Sean and Amelie from online abuse and what they described as ā€œhurtfulā€ conspiracy theories about their sister’s disappearance.

But their son realising a boyhood dream on one of sport’s grandest stages is a moment they will look back on with great fondness.
