King Charles has clarified Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal status, but an expert claims his letter also carried a warning for officials dealing with them. The King directed officials to circulate guidance after receiving a “number of requests” for clarification.

Expert claims King Charles’ letter contained instructions for people dealing with Harry and Meghan

The letter confirmed that Harry and Meghan remain non-working members of the Royal Family despite returning to Britain. Their charitable work will continue privately, while their office will operate independently from the Royal Household. Their HRH styles remain suspended.

PR expert Sam Gauchier believes the message went beyond Harry and Meghan. She told The Express US that Charles wanted to prevent their return from creating confusion about their relationship with the monarchy.

She told the outlet, “I think King Charles is saying that Harry and Meghan returning to the UK shouldn’t be mistaken for a return to royal life. They may still be the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, but they speak for themselves, not the King or the monarchy.”

Gauchier also highlighted the letter’s distribution. Officials sent it to senior government and military figures, along with the King’s representatives across the country. Harry’s team also received a copy.

“The letter went to government officials, military leaders and the King’s representatives across the country. So to me, it feels less like a reminder to Harry and Meghan and more like instructions for everyone dealing with them now that they’re back,” she said.

The letter also stated, “To help avoid doubt or confusion, The King has directed that the following information be shared.”

Gauchier said the wording mattered because the document did not change the Sussexes’ existing position. Instead, it reinforced the arrangement established after they stepped back as working royals in 2020.

Harry and Meghan retain their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles. However, they do not use the His and Her Royal Highness styles. The letter also stressed that “there is no change to the current status” of the couple following their return. Harry and Meghan returned to Britain in August with Archie and Lilibet, who have since started school. The guidance therefore focused on clarity rather than changing its formal position.
