Crown Princess Mette-Marit’s son Marius Borg Høiby will remain in prison awaiting his verdict on 39 charges, including rape and abuse. He has been in prison since February 1, when he was arrested again on the eve of his trial. The verdict will be announced in early June, and sentencing will take place afterwards.

According to Dagbladet, Høiby appealed his detention to the Borgarting Court of Appeal, but the appeal was rejected. “We have no comment other than that we are taking note of it and will check if there is any basis for an appeal,” his defense attorney Petar Sekulic said today.

Høiby denies most of the 39 charges, including four counts of rape, but has already pleaded guilty to some of the lesser offenses including a drugs charge and breaking a restraining order. Last week, prosecutors requested a jail term of seven years and seven months.

The Norwegian royal family has not commented on the case or his ongoing imprisonment. “Marius Borg Høiby is not a member of the Royal House of Norway and is therefore autonomous,” his stepfather, Prince Haakon, said in a statement before the trail began. “We care about him, and he is an important member of our family. He is a citizen of Norway and, as such, has the same responsibilities as everyone else — as well as the same rights.” This Sunday, Crown Prince Haakon, Crown Princess Mette-Marit, and Prince Sverre Magnus visited Høiby in Oslo prison.

Today, the Norwegian royals are hosting Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde on a state visit. Princess Mette-Marit was not expected to participate due to her ongoing health problems, but made a last-minute appearance to welcome the Belgium royal couple at the Royal Palace in Oslo alongside Prince Haakon, King Harald, and Queen Sonja.
