Matthew McConaughey celebrated Woody Harrelson’s 65th birthday with a throwback photo and heartfelt Instagram post

The longtime friends have worked together on multiple projects including EDtv, Surfer, Dude and True Detective

McConaughey has previously revealed their families suspect they may be biologically related after a comment from his mother

Matthew McConaughey is celebrating his longtime friend, Woody Harrelson.

Harrelson turned 65 on July 23, and McConaughey shared a post to Instagram to mark the occasion.

“From another mother? Happy birthday brother,” the actor captioned the post, which showed a throwback photo of the pair as young actors.

The two have both personal and professional ties, and first worked together on the 1999 satire film EDtv. They reunited for the 2008 comedy film Surfer, Dude and in season one of HBO’s True Detective.

McConaughey has referred to Harrelson as a “brother from another mother“ in various social media posts over the years — but the two could actually be related, he has shared.

In a 2023 appearance on Kelly Ripa‘s SiriusXM podcast Let’s Talk off Camera with Kelly Ripa, the Interstellar star opened up about his long bond with Harrelson.

“Where I start and where he ends and where he starts and I end has always been a murky line, and that’s part of our bromance, right?” he acknowledged. “My kids call him Uncle Woody, his kids call me Uncle Matthew.”

McConaughey also shared that he and Harrelson’s families have even confused each other in photos — leading to a revelation that the pair may actually be biologically related.

“My family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me, his family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him,” the actor told Ripa. “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families and et cetera and my mom is there. And she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ “

Going on to explain that there was a moment in their family’s pasts where McConaughey’s mother may have met Harrelson’s father while McConaughey’s parents were divorced, the actor shared that the two were working on a project (which is slated to premiere in September) built around the idea.
