Olivia Rodrigo says her new song "The Cure" is unrelated to the band but calls the connection a happy coincidence
Rodrigo does, however, have a close friendship with The Cure's Robert Smith and brought him onstage during her 2025 Glastonbury set
Her upcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love explores self-discovery and her first experience with real love
Olivia Rodrigo's new song "The Cure" may have nothing to do with the English rock band — but her affinity for them remains.
During an interview on the Elvis Duran Show on Thursday, May 21, the singer-songwriter was asked if the "Boys Don't Cry" band served as an inspiration for her next single (out Friday, May 22).
"Honestly, this song, 'The Cure,' has nothing to do with the band," Rodrigo, 23, said. "Although I love it so much, it just is a happy coincidence."

Reflecting on the song, Rodrigo said she was "proud" of how it came together.
"It's a new perspective that I haven't had the maturity to express before in earlier albums," she said of "The Cure," which she previously said was one of her favorites she's ever written.
Though the "Friday I'm in Love" singers weren't a direct inspiration for Rodrigo, the "Traitor" singer said that the band's frontman Robert Smith is a "friend."
"I love him. We talk like, every week. He's amazing," she said.

In June 2025, the "Vampire" singer brought out Smith, 67, during her Glastonbury set and they sang "Just Like Heaven" and "Friday I'm in Love."
Then, in April, Smith opened up to British Vogue about their friendship — and said he was flattered when she called about the Glastonbury appearance.
"I bought Sour, and then Guts (both on CD!)" he wrote to the outlet. "Although most of the songs on those two albums are not really ‘aimed at my demographic’(!), they are all so good that it is hard not to fall in love with them."

He continued, "She calls me up quite a bit to talk about clothes and fashion – and we have enjoyed a couple of memorable nights in the studio together… I can’t wait to hear what she does next."
"The Cure" will follow the release of "Drop Dead" and they're both set to be featured on her forthcoming album You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love on June 12.
During a recent appearance on On Air with Ryan Seacrest, Rodrigo said she experienced "real romantic love for the first time" while working on the album. She also said the album was largely about discovery.
"There's just so much to unpack in it," she said, adding that it was about "discovering so many things about myself and also being in a real relationship. I think a good relationship holds a mirror to you and shows you parts of yourself that you never would have been able to see before. There's a lot of looking inward."
