Report: Candidates for Lakers assistant GM role 'were left confused'

While the Los Angeles Lakers have been remodeling their roster this summer, they have also been looking to continue the remodeling process in their front office that began when Mark Walter purchased a majority share of the franchise several months ago.

They brought in new people to work in prominent roles in the business side of the organization while also hiring important personnel for the basketball side of operations, such as former NCAA coach Tony Bennett, who is a draft advisor for the team.

The Lakers also hired Rohan Ramadas as an assistant general manager in charge of their analytics department. General manager Rob Pelinka stated that they would look to hire a second assistant general manager, but they haven't found one yet.

According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, the other assistant general manager the team wants to hire will have different responsibilities from Ramadas'. But candidates for the role have been "left confused about the process."

"The Lakers hired Rohan Ramadas as assistant general manager to run their analytics department, one pillar of the offseason expansion. The other was intended to have a focus on development and scouting, two areas — and it can’t be overstated — that will be critical for the Lakers as they build around the [Luka] Dončić-[Austin] Reaves-[Walker] Kessler core. The Lakers conducted interviews with multiple candidates dating back to last season but have yet to make a hire. People with interest in the position were left confused about the process, according to league sources.

"Two candidates, Minnesota’s Steve Senior and Philadelphia’s Prosper Karangwa, are widely believed to have turned the Lakers down before staying with their current organizations. Adding the head of scouting is seen as the first step for the Lakers to address a longtime need: a lack of a robust pro scouting department. The Lakers’ 2025-26 media guide lists just three full-time domestic scouts and two international scouts. All, per league sources, had been primarily (if not fully) tasked with amateur scouting."

For years, prior to Walter's purchase of the franchise, it had allegedly been run like a small, family-owned business that was always looking to cut costs and avoid investing lots of money into its operations. As a result, it had a bare-bones staff that didn't resemble a modern pro sports franchise, let alone one that has won 17 NBA championships.

Those days appear to be over, although the transition to modernity isn't quite complete.
