Scott Foley says he was given "a hard time" after being cast in Scream 3.
While talking with PEOPLE at the It's Not Like That premiere in New York City on Jan. 21, Foley recalls being criticized for accepting a role in the 2000 horror film.
“When I did Scream 3, I sort of got a hard time for it because at the time, they considered it a teen slasher movie, right? And it wasn't considered real acting work," he says.
Regardless of some initial opinions, Foley says he is "so proud to be a part of this franchise."

Foley will return for the latest film in the franchise, Scream 7, which is slated for release in late February 2026.
He tells PEOPLE that coming back for the seventh Scream installment “was a dream," but also a bit shocking.
“I never thought I'd get the chance," he admits. "My character died in the third installment. When I got the call from Kevin Williamson — it was actually a text asking me to come back — I was confused, but on board, instantly."
Foley tells PEOPLE he still gets lots of support from Scream fans, some of whom even showed up to the premiere of his new show, despite last starring in the franchise 25 years ago.
“I just signed a dozen autographs and took a bunch of pictures — and they were all Scream fans. They had masks and knives and little figurines, and it's an ongoing thing, and I'm so proud to be a part of it,” he shares.
Along with Foley, the Wes Craven-directed slasher movie featured Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, David Arquette, Parker Posey, Patrick Dempsey and Jenny McCarthy.
Foley played Roman Bridger, the half-brother of Campbell’s character, Sidney Prescott. Later in the movie, he was revealed to be the director-turned-killer who was traumatizing the movie set.

The second week working on the film, he was talking with a group of people, which included Craven’s producing partner Marianne Maddalena, and he remembered everyone laughing at “an inside joke that I wasn't a part of.”
"Someone said something and then Marianne said, 'You know what we're talking about, right?' And I sort of smiled and I said, 'I have no idea what anybody's talking about.' And she said, 'You're the killer,'" he said.
"I will never forget, Wes Craven had his New York Times crossword in his hand, folded up, and looked at me over the top of his glasses when Marianne said it, just to gauge my reaction," the Felicity actor shared.
"And I was so ... I don't know if I was happy or taken aback, but it was such a specific moment for me. And I think partially because having that sort of information as an actor can help you, and I understand why they kept it from me initially,” he shared. “But it was exciting, yeah. And to this day, to this day, I'm still [like], 'Hey, you were the killer in Scream 3.' I had no idea. It's so cool."
