Jason Lewis returned to social media with a video message after being “quiet” for three years

The Sex and the City alum said he stepped away to focus on creative work: “I had something to do”

Jason Lewis is back on social media after several years away.

The Sex and the City alum, 54, resurfaced online with a new video message, marking his first post after what he described as three years of being “quiet.”

“After three years, it was time,” Lewis captioned the video.

In the clip, the actor explained that his absence was tied to a creative project that required his full attention.

“I went quiet. Not because I have nothing to say, but because I had something to do,” Lewis said in the video. “The kind of creative work that doesn’t leave room for much else, and I made my peace with that.”

“It’s the kind of work that needs to find its people, though,” he continued. “I’m still in it, but I am far enough along now that it felt like it was time to resurface and share what I’ve been doing. More to come.”

Lewis is best known for playing Smith Jerrod, Samantha Jones’ loyal boyfriend on Sex and the City, opposite Kim Cattrall. He later reprised the role in both Sex and the City films.

Although fans speculated about whether Lewis would return for HBO Max’s And Just Like That…, the actor previously said he was never approached about appearing in the revival.

“I have not [been approached], but I would be the last to know! As much as I appreciate the flattery, the conversation is about the girls,” Lewis told Daily Front Row in 2021.

“I think a good story well told lets us know we're not alone in the world. It speaks to universal themes that matter to all of us,” he said. “And it was a very viscerally entertaining show: beautiful sets, clothing…shoes! Those dramatic life experiences. Michael Patrick King was brilliant… he spoke to things that matter.”

Since his time on Sex and the City, Lewis has appeared in several television series, including How I Met Your Mother, CSI: Miami and Charmed. He also starred as Joe Strong on NBC’s supernatural drama Midnight, Texas from 2017 to 2018.

In 2022, Lewis competed on season 31 of Dancing with the Stars, though he was eliminated during the first week of competition.

Offscreen, Lewis announced his engagement to actress and producer Liz Godwin in 2020. Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the time, he shared details about his Malibu proposal.

“To keep Liz from suspecting anything, I organized a climbing [and] beach day out at Point Dume, Malibu, with friends and family gathered for the holidays,” Lewis said. “We set Liz up to climb a cliff right over the water, just before sunset.”

“My buddies and I then sprinted up a back trail to the climb so I could be waiting for her at the top,” he continued. “I anchored myself to the rock — clipped her to me, just in case — then got on one knee and did ‘the thing.’ ”
