Divas have long dominated the cultural conversation. Aside from entertaining us with their awe-inducing talent and timeless hits, certified divas like Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin, and many more have also treated us to unforgettable performances, interviews, and unintentional words of wisdom throughout their decades of inspiring us all.

In honor of Diva Week, Harper’s Bazaar is looking back at some of the most memorable, hilarious, and eternally referenced moments in diva history, including everything from Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston’s dress-off live on MTV to Lady Gaga birthing a quote that would go on to define a generation of club kids.

Read ahead to relive the greatest moments in recent memory—and long live the diva.

Whitney Houston performs the National Anthem at Super Bowl XXV (1991)

A 27-year-old Whitney Houston awed a whopping 80 million viewers when she performed her iconic rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” at Super Bowl XXV in Tampa Bay, Florida. Everything from that two-minute performance—from her sporty white tracksuit to her powerhouse vocals and her beaming smile when she stuck the landing at the song's end—are all forever etched in our memory. It's impossible to watch—even today—without getting goose bumps, and it’s eternal proof that Houston will always be known as the voice.

Prince changing his name to a symbol (1993)

Prince Rodgers Nelson may have been a man, but he was also, inarguably, a diva. In 1993, the Minnesota-born legend announced he would be changing his name into a symbol of his own design as an act of rebellion against his record label. In a statement released at the time, he described it as “an unpronounceable symbol whose meaning has not been identified. It’s all about thinking in new ways, tuning in 2 a new free-quency.” What was even more iconic was that it forced everyone to refer to him as the Artist Formerly Known as Prince, often shortened to simply “the Artist.” Although he eventually changed his name back to Prince after he was out of his contract with Warner Bros., the title of the Artist remained forever.

Patti Labelle’s “This Christmas” performance at the National Tree Lighting Ceremony (1996)

“Where are my background singers???” In a performance that was memed into oblivion decades later, soul singer Patti LaBelle appeared at the 1996 National Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony in Washington, D.C., to perform a few holiday songs. The production was woefully unprepared for LaBelle, however; the teleprompter wasn’t working, the music timing was off, and, most importantly, the background singers were MIA, causing LaBelle to riff like no diva has ever riffed before.

The original VH1 Divas Live special (1998)

VH1's former landmark live-music special was quite literally the definition of spectacular. The biggest women in music would come together—and perform together—for a one-night-only celebration that showcased their joint accomplishments and trailblazing within the music industry. While VH1 produced different iterations of the event, the original 1998 production is fully cemented in pop culture. Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, Celine Dione, and of course Aretha Franklin all shared the stage for a powerhouse rendition of Carole King’s “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman”—and who can forget Celine daring to go toe to toe in a riff-off with the ultimate diva herself in Franklin?

When rumors of a bitter feud between two of the greatest voices of a generation came to a boiling point, Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston decided to lean into the bit. While presenting together at the 1998 MTV Video Music Awards, the two superstars appeared onstage in the same chocolate-brown Vera Wang dress. “Fortunately, I come prepared for moments like this.… Try it on me!” Carey quipped onstage before ripping off the bottom half of her gown and turning her ensemble into a asymmetrical minidress, showing off her (allegedly) insured million-dollar legs. Houston followed suit, and the two divas ended the “debacle” with a well-meaning hug.

Diana Ross and Lil Kim’s gentle boob bounce (1999)

The VMAs are known for chaotic, jaw-dropping moments, and in 1999 Miss Diana Ross wanted in on the fun. At that year’s ceremony, Ross joined Mary J. Blige and Lil’ Kim—who was draped in a now-iconic asymmetric purple sequined jumpsuit that left one sequined-seashell-covered breast exposed—to present an award. The former leader of the Supremes couldn’t help but be dazzled by the rapper’s ensemble and give her bedazzled boob a little … bounce!

The “Lady Marmalade” music-video premiere—and the lore that came with it (2001)

It’s rare that we receive full-fledged collaborations between divas because, well …divas don’t always like to share the spotlight. But the 2001 cover of Patti LaBelle’s “Lady Marmalade” featuring Christina Aguilera, Pink, Mya, Lil’ Kim, and Missy Elliott for the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack was a landmark moment in pop history. This wasn’t about pacifying stan wars or upping artist streams; it was just to simply make a damn good song. The song went on to become only the third collaboration by individual female artists in history to hit number one on the Billboard 100, and it was the first-ever song to top the charts with more than two credited female artists. It of course also won the Grammy for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals too. Plus, who can forget the rumors that Pink was upset over Christina being made the lead of the song?

Aretha Franklin birthing the phrase “Great gowns, beautiful gowns” (2014)

Wall Street Journal / YouTube

Aretha Franklin wasn’t just one of the greatest singers of all time, she was also one of the shadiest. During an interview with The Wall Street Journal, she was asked to give immediate reactions to fellow divas new and old—including Adele, Alicia Keys, and Whitney Houston—but when Franklin was asked her thoughts on Taylor Swift, however, one of the most unintentionally savage one-liners was born. “Okay…” she began, looking up to the ceiling for a brief second as she thought carefully. “Great gowns … beautiful gowns.” It was a quote so cutting, many people overlook the second dose of shade she delivered when she was asked about rapper Nicki Minaj. “Nicki Minaj … hmm … I’m gonna pass on that one.”

Lady Gaga’s “Bus. Club. Another club. Another club. Plane. Next place. No sleep.”

Lady Gaga understands the grind that goes into diva-dom. When promoting her sophomore album, Born This Way, the star recalled the nonstop chaos that fueled the creation of her first two albums, with her passionate recap of her early days turning into an eternally referenced quote for hustling divas everywhere. “If you think I wrote The Fame in peace, you have a strong misconception about what I have been through to get where I am today. The fight. Being dropped by record labels. Being told I was too strange. Being told that the music was too dance. I had to write record after record until finally ‘Just Dance’ occurred,” the singer recalled. “I had to fight for a year—tooth and nail, blood, sweat, and leather, every night. No sleep. Bus. Club. Another club. Another club. Plane. Next Place. No sleep. No fear. Nobody believed in me.”

Mariah Carey vs. Jennifer Lopez: “I don’t know her.”

When Mariah Carey claims she doesn’t know you, she really means it. In the early aughts, when Carey was fresh off her divorce from Sony exec Tommy Mottola and a fresh-faced Jennifer Lopez was bursting upon the pop and R&B scene, comparisons instantly came up between the two women, due to their ties to the music titan. When Carey was asked her thoughts on Lopez three decades ago, however, she famously quipped, “I don’t know her,” to avoid having to divulge more. The line has become a top-tier example of diva shade, and still, to this day, Carey is asked whether or not she knows Lopez.

Adele: “Divorce, babe, divorce.” (2021)

Adele often lets her music do the talking, but during an impromptu Instagram Live session ahead of the release of her last album, 30, the singer gave an iconic peek into her emotional and creative headspace. When an IG user asked the star a simple question—what is 30 about?—Adele replied in her quick-witted British tone, “Divorce, babe, divorce!” Spoken like a true diva.
