Season 9 premieres on ABC in January 2027
The Rookie stars know they sent fans into a tizzy with the season 8 finale.
During a panel at the 2026 San Diego Comic Con on Saturday, July 25, the cast and crew behind the hit ABC crime drama teased what’s in store after that major cliffhanger.
After Eric Winter’s Tim proposed to Melissa O’Neil’s Lucy, they were both kidnapped by assailants working under Jeffrey Vincent Parise’s Heath Everett. Their fates were left up in the air in the finale that aired on May 4.
O’Neil described Tim and Lucy’s emotional storyline as a “roller coaster.”
Star Nathan Fillion then asked the fans in attendance how many “had a conniption in their living room” while watching the proposal and kidnapping unfold.
“We will send you some magnesium to calm you down,” O’Neil, 38, joked. “Have a nice little bit of tea. We are so sorry for that. But also, thank you for going along for the ride.”

O’Neil said she was “in shock” to read the proposal scene in the script because “I can’t believe he’s finally giving it to them,” meaning creator-showrunner Alexi Hawley giving fans what they want with the Tim-Lucy romance. But “then the next moment” she read the kidnapping twist and was like, “see, I knew he wasn’t gonna give it to them!”
“My heart went out to everyone who was deeply invested because I was like, this is gonna be hard,” she added.

While the cast did not reveal whether Tim and Lucy will immediately escape their kidnappers or how the cliffhanger will affect their engagement, Hawley confirmed that production on season 9 began “last week,” noting the episodes would not air until January.
Also during the Comic Con panel, Hawley revealed that the season 9 opener will be a “huge” two-parter, “so it won’t all be resolved in one episode.”

“There’s a lot going on. ... I think it’s the best of what we do,” said the showrunner, adding that it’s “incredibly high stakes” and “dramatic.”
“I just wish everybody didn’t have to wait until January to see it,” he told the crowd.
Hawley previously told TV Insider that the upcoming season will be “thrilling and emotional and just pushing boundaries as we always try and do, do some stuff we haven’t done before.”
Hawley added of picking up where fans left off, “I think we should be worried for sure. I mean, as a show, we definitely push the envelope with some of our characters and stuff like that. And there are real stakes on the show. That said, I also don’t want to send the internet scrambling and freaking out too much, but I do think that, yes, that the stakes are real.”
The Rookie season 9 is expected to premiere on ABC in January 2027.
