- *For All Mankind* is an Apple TV sci-fi drama exploring a world in which Russia landed on the moon before the United States.
- Season 5 explores tensions between Earth and the still-developing Mars colony.
- The 10-episode season premieres on March 27.**
*For All Mankind* was one of the first series to debut on Apple TV, and it continues to be one of the best.
Across four seasons, the sci-fi drama has imagined a world in which the USSR beat the United States to the moon, changing the arc of the Space Race and reshaping geopolitics in fascinating ways. Each season jumps several years ahead, allowing the creators to explore chewy themes about progress, technology, politics, and class. By season 4, a colony was even being established on Mars.
It's been over two years since season 4 wrapped, and fans are eager for the show's return. If you're one of them, we've got answers for you. Below is everything to know about *For All Mankind* season 5, from its release date to its new cast members.**
How did For All Mankind season 4 end?

Season 4 of *For All Mankind* jumped forward to the 2000s, exploring a class war boiling over between the blue-collar workers on Mars' Happy Valley base and the space program suits leading the charge.
This unfolds against a war for Goldilocks, a resource-rich asteroid coveted by both by the Mars program and NASA back in Houston. Throughout the season, the Mars program tries to keep the asteroid in the Red Planet's orbit, with covert action from Margo (Wrenn Schmidt) and Aleida (Coral Peña) helping the Happy Valley clan succeed.
The long-simmering class tensions — exacerbated by the torture techniques deployed by Mars security forces — give way to a riot between the workers and colonists. Danielle (Krys Marshall) is shot, but it's revealed at the end of the finale that she survived.

On Earth, Margo takes the fall for her and Aleida's sabotage. She's cuffed by the FBI and faces deportation back to Russia. Aleida, meanwhile, mourns the death of Soviet engineer (and defector) Sergei (Piotr Adamczyk), whose murder was staged to look like a suicide (presumably by Svetlana Efremova's Irina, a Soviet official affiliated with Roscosmos, the Russian space agency).
Season 4 ends by jumping forward to 2012, where we see Goldilocks in Mars' orbit, where an extensive mining operation is unfolding.**
What is For All Mankind season 5 about?

Happy Valley is thriving at the beginning of season 5, "with thousands of residents and a base for new missions that will take us even further into the solar system," per an official synopsis. "But with the nations of Earth now demanding law and order on the Red Planet, friction continues to build between the people who live on Mars and their former home."
“Season 5 is a lot about how that shifting of the decks really changes things,” said co-creator Matt Wolpert in an interview with Inverse. “As technology makes Mars more livable and it becomes a bigger colony, how does that change the dynamics of Mars and Earth and the solar system?"
In a separate interview with Collider, he spoke about the factional conflicts that will escalate in season 5. “We can say that, obviously, season 4 ended with an asteroid being stolen, and so there are a lot of people on Earth who are pretty pissed off about that. I think that more than anything, I would say the thrust of the season 5 story is how a rift is forming between the people who live on Mars — and more and more people are now living on Mars — and the people who have stayed back on Earth. And so, this show that started with a U.S. versus USSR Cold War is now developing into a Mars versus Earth political schism."**
Is there a For All Mankind season 5 trailer?
While we're still waiting on a proper trailer, *For All Mankind*'s first season 5 teaser tracks an astronaut on a motorbike as they cut through the sand of Mars.
"Everything that's happened has led to this moment," intones the voice of Joel Kinnaman's Ed Baldwin. "You're gonna do things people can't even fathom. It's on you to make the next move."**
If that sounds like an elder speaking to their kin, that's because it likely is. At the end of the teaser, the astronaut removes their helmet to reveal a character played by Sean Kaufman. While it's not confirmed, many are speculating that this is a grown-up Alex Baldwin, Ed's grandson and the son of his daughter, Kelly Baldwin (Cynthy Wu).
That would make sense, as season 5 appears to be about the next generation continuing the work of their forefathers.**

Since each season of *For All Mankind *jumps forward several years, there's no guarantee that your faves will stick around. That said, rest assured that Kinnaman's Ed is confirmed to appear in season 5, even if, as pre-release photos show, he's getting comically old.
Also set to return? Edi Gathegi (Dev) and Toby Kebbell (Miles), as well as Wu, Peña, and Schmidt.
Kaufman (*The Summer I Turned Pretty*) is one of several new faces joining the series. He'll be joined by Mireille Enos (*Task*), Costa Ronin (*The Americans*), Ruby Cruz (*Mare of Easttown*), and Ines Asserson (*Royalteen*).**
