Wyatt Russell is working with Steven Spielberg in the director's newest movie, 52 years after the actor's mother Goldie Hawn starred in one of Spielberg's earliest films.
Russell, 39, stars in Spielberg's new science fiction thriller Disclosure Dayalongside Emily Blunt, Josh O'Connor, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo and Colin Firth. The actor stepped out along with Spielberg, 79, and the movie's cast at its New York City premiere on Monday, June 8, which comes more than a half-century after his mother Hawn, 80, starred in 1974's The Sugarland Express. (Hawn shares son Wyatt with actor Kurt Russell.)
"I think she was excited that I was going to be working with Steven and that was fun for her, for her son to be able to do," Russell tells PEOPLE of the familial connection to Spielberg's legendary body of work. "I can't remember [who] the first person I told was. Probably my wife. I don't know if I told my family for a minute because I was like, 'Wow, there's a chance I get cut out of the movie. So let's wait until it comes out and then I'll tell you I'm in the movie.' "
Hawn famously starred in Spielberg's The Sugarland Express, the third feature-length film the director made. The movie sees Hawn portray a married woman who helps her husband (William Atherton) break out of prison and attempt to reunite with their child before he is placed in foster care. The Sugarland Express is notably the last movie Spielberg made before he became a household name with the 1975 blockbuster Jaws.
"It was fun. It's a fun thing to look back on Sugarland Express and to think that I got to work with him now and she got to work with him then," he adds.

Disclosure Day stars O'Connor, 36, as a man named Daniel who intends to publicly expose information regarding the existence of non-human intelligence on Earth. Blunt, 43, costars in the movie as a meteorologist named Margaret, who is inadvertently brought into the larger conspiracy to reveal information about aliens on our planet. Russell portrays Margaret's boyfriend, who is brought along for the ride after she begins making strange noises during a news broadcast.
"Incredible," Russell says of working with Blunt. "As great of an actress and as much command and range and depth that she has as an actress, she's also that great as a person so it makes it a, a lot of fun to do it. It makes it easy for me because a lot of my stuff is reacting off of her. So it was like, 'Be a good listener and think I'm going to be all right.' Whenever you get to work with anybody like her who's that good, it makes you better and it's a gift that keeps on giving."

Russell also tells PEOPLE that if aliens actually did come to Earth and he were in charge of showing them a movie, he would show them Spielberg's 1993 Holocaust drama Schindler's List. "I've always been a worst foot forward guy, so I was [thinking] Schindler's List, like — this is the worst of us. You want to know what Earth is like? This is what we can do to each other, so help us out."
Disclosure Day is in theaters June 12.
